The Woman Who Taught the World What It Means to Love God

There are forms of intimacy with God that language can barely carry.
And perhaps women understand something about intimacy that men can only approach from the outside. The Arabic word raḥm — womb — comes from the same root as raḥma, mercy, and al-Raḥmān, the Infinitely Merciful. A woman carries within her body a sign of nearness, tenderness, protection, pain, creation, and love.
She knows what it means to carry.
She knows what it means to ache.
She knows what it means to love something so deeply that the love itself changes her.
And among the women who walked this earth, there is one whose name became almost inseparable from the language of divine love:
Rābiʿa al-ʿAdawiyya.
If you are a woman searching for intimacy with God and you have never encountered Rābiʿa, then there is an ocean you have not yet seen.
She was not merely someone who worshipped God.
She loved Him.
Not because she feared Hell.
Not because she desired Paradise.
Not because she wanted status, recognition, miracles, followers, or a place in history.
She wanted God.
That was enough.
Rābiʿa stands in the spiritual imagination like a mountain surrounded by an ocean: immense, solitary, almost impossible to measure. Her words do not sound like the words of someone negotiating with Heaven. They sound like the words of someone who has already surrendered everything except love itself.
Imagine her beneath the night sky.
The world is quiet.
The stars are above her.
And yet somehow the stars seem less alive than the heart looking back at them.
A woman alone with her Lord.
No audience.
No performance.
No institution between them.
No need to explain herself.
Just the servant and the One she loves.
There are saints who teach us how to pray.
There are saints who teach us how to endure.
There are saints who teach us how to fear God, obey God, remember God, and return to God.
Rābiʿa teaches us what happens when love consumes everything else.
And that is why, more than a thousand years later, we are still talking about her.
Perhaps we are not really studying Rābiʿa at all.
Perhaps we are standing at the edge of her ocean, asking ourselves whether we have ever truly understood what it means to love God.
